Situational Irony- The Midas Touch

Remember old Midas? There is an expression, "Be careful what you wish for, you might get it some day." Think about Federigo's Falcon, and the quandary Giovanna and Federigo find themselves in; describe a similar situation from modern comedy, either on TV or the internet.

  1. Its not an example from television, nor is it considered a comedy, but The Sixth Sense is perhaps the most distinct and recognizable example of situational irony. In the film, we, as viewers, are led to believe that Bruce Willis's character is a man struggling with identity and marital issues, and more importantly, we assume that he is still alive.

The irony makes itself apparent when we discover that Willis's character is in fact a ghost, and no one but the child is capable of perceiving him.

The two examples are quite different, but both have foundations in situational irony.

  2. Federigo loved Giovanna so much that he was willing to do anything to win her heart. This is clearly shown when he prepares a dinner for Giovanna from his pet falcon which he loved so dearly. When Giovanna learned of his sacrifice for her, she felt sorry for Federigo, while at the same time, she feared that he may love something more than her in the future, and questioned what he would do to her if he did. While he did win her heart, there were other ways in which Federigo could have proved his love for her Giovanna rather than sacrifice the thig he loved second most.

  3. An example of the quote " Be careful what you wish for, you might get it some day", would be from the show LOST. In this show one of the main characters, Jack, wants to get off the island that he, and other people, have been stranded on for quite some time. However, once he gets off the island, something in his brain clicks and now he is totally convinced that he was supposed to stay on the island and that it was his destiny. Once he realizes this he becomes insane and desperately tries to get back to the island, hoping that if flies on a plane over the island, then just by chance he might make it.

  4. There are many TV shows and books that take that concept. Like in the story "The Monkey's Paw" a man gives this family "The White" a monkey's paw and tells them that it will grant them three wishes. Mr. White, delightedly makes a wish to get $200. The next day, a worker in the same company tell the Whites that there son was in a tragic accident and gives them $200, in compensation. This is the classic example of "Be careful of what you wish for". There are other examples that are not as depressing as this like when disney make like ten movies on kids wishing that they where treated like adults, then when it actually happens, they regret it and learn there lesson. So this is a universal theme that many shows and stories use.

  5. "Be careful what you wish for" is a very common theme in pop culture in things like movies, television shows, comics, literature, etc. In Federigo's Falcon Giovanna and Federigo face a similar situation but this story is just one of the many stories that visit this theme. For example, the movie "Freaky Friday" is an entire movie about this issue. The daughter in the movie wishes that her mom would know what it was like to live her life, and as a result, her mother and her end up switching places for a day. It wasn't a pleasant experience either. Although it all worked out in the end and the mother and daughter learned to understand and appreciate each other, they definitely regret wishing to experience each other's lives.

  6. Federigo's Falcon was a story of a man proving his love to a woman names Giovanna. He proves his love by sacrificing his favorite pet falcon in order to feed her dinner. When Giovanna finds out, at first she is upset and disgusted, but then she realizes how much of a man it takes to sacrifice something you love, for something you love even more.
"Be careful what you wish for" is definintly a true statement. It is very common in movies for a character to get something that they wanted and then realize it's not what they REALLY wanted. They may think at the time that they really want it, but something usually goes terribly wrong. I think that you should be careful what you wish for because sometimes we say things/do things out of anger and don't really wish for it to turn out how it does.

  7. "Be careful what you wish for, you might get it some day." this quote used to be use in the old days like in the 1930 to 1960. My point is its not used now a days expect if there nerds and into Federigo's Falcon. Movies now are less watched because of all the wonderfully video games that are out.

  8. I believe that the statement "Be careful what you wish for" is a true statement because it's used a lot in movies. In the Federigo's Falcon, he proves his love to Giovanna by sacrificing his falcon in order to feed Giovanna, then Giovanna realizes how much it takes to sacrifice something you love.
