New Laws-American Government

Consider how laws come into being. Explain at least two ways a law comes into being, then outline 2 laws you would like to see in affect. Explain the reasoning behind them, by elaborating on how many people would benefit from your laws.

  1. Laws came into being because someone did something that others did not like; so they made a rule that one cannot do that anymore. Laws were made to keep peace and tranquility but it ends up causing more chaos because people break them and others chase those who break it. I would like to see free health care because the health care in America is bad. Most people resort to treating themselves when they are injured or sick. Everyone will benefit because there will be better health in the U.S. I also think that people should be able to choose where their tax money goes so someone that is anti-war can choose to not have their tax money go to war. Instead they can choose other things such as health care, homeless shelters, schools, etc. This would help because people can choose what their tax dollars are paying for and how they can help themselves.

  2. A law can come into being if the law is put on the ballot and people vote in favor of it. A law can also come into being if people of congress and the president feel that they need to make this a law, for the good of the people, or the economy. A law I would like to see come into affect is for immigrants to have the right to be able to live into this country without having the fear of being deported. I have a lot of family members who live in this country and they are illegal immigrants. I would like for them to be able to apply to whatever job they wanted, and drive a car without the worry of being pulled over and/or searched and ultimately deported. Lots of people would appreciate this law being passed, they would not have to worry about their loved ones leaving the country or losing their jobs. Another law I would like to see passed is about owning ferrets legally. The United States Fish and Wildlife Service has said that ferrets endanger the wildlife, so they cannot be owned without a permit. I, like millions of other people would like to be able to have the right to be able to own a ferret in my household. I have done some research and have learned that there is no way for an ordinary citizen like you and me to own ferrets as pets. This is kind of ironic, because I have been to Walmart, millions of times, and I always see that they sell ferret food. I mean why sell it if most people can't own them. Only zoos and laboratories have the right by law and with permission of the government to own ferrets, but they are usually not pets. It was supposed to be on the ballot, but Arnold Schwarzenegger said, he needed more time to think about it and it was never put on the ballot. A lot of people want to own ferrets there was recently on "You Tube" a video on a man who told California that he illegally owned ferrets and that people should have the right to own them. One of the benefits to this law being passed is that the happiness of ferret lovers would increase, and people would not have to resort to hiding their ferrets. The penalty in California for owning a ferret is six months in jail, a 1000 dollar fine, and the ferret is destroyed.

  3. Great ideas Lupita! Vince: you need to check ch3, and see exactly how a law becomes a law....I'm looking for a textbook answer to the first part....

  4. There is a long process before a law enforced. A law starts off as a bill; after the bill is proposed it needs a member of Congress to sponsor it in order to move on. The bill is then introduced to a committee and subcommittee, if approved they send it to the House of Representatives. If the bill passes the House of Representatives it then goes to the Senate, if the bill is enrolled then it’s sent to the president of the United States. If the president approves of the bill it becomes a law although if the president disapproves it is vetoed. Furthermore, even though the president vetoed the bill, the bill can still become a law if Congress votes to override the veto. Another way a law can come into being is if the president feels it is needed for the economy.
A law I would like to see in affect would be to make sure every citizen gets health care. People would benefit from this law because they wouldn’t get sick and they would have a doctor when needed. Another law I would like to see in affect is that the President only gets to serve for two years. This would be beneficial because then there would be more change in the environment.

  5. I agreee with vince when he stated, Laws came into being because someone did something that others did not like; so they made a rule that one cannot do that anymore. Laws are what make our world a more peaceful place to live. There are so many laws that we have to follow. Everyone breaks at least more than one law in their life time. Laws we do not follow there are always consequences the government has for the ones who decide to break them. A law I would like to see happen is a preseident shoulf only serve for two years instead of four because our country needs a change since there is so much proverty today. I also agree again with what Vince said about how people should not have to pay taxes that go to war necause alot of people are aganist the war and why should they have to work hard for the money they earned and have most of it go towards the government. I mean I have not seen any new improvmnets that we really need. I just feel they spend money on things we do not really need. But then again I do no know much about how the government works since it changes so much.

  6. The congress makes laws, creates agencies and programs, appropriates funds to carry out laws and programs, may override veto with 2/3 vote, may remove President through impeachment; Senate approves treaties and presidential appointments. Congress also create lower courts, may remove judges through impeachment; Senate approves or rejects appointment of judges. The President may veto legislation, may call special sessions, recommend legislation, and appeal to the people. Judes are appointed for life, free from executive control; courts may declare executive actions to be unconstitutional. Courts may declare acts of Congress to be unconstitutional.

  8. A law is first started as a bill. Once the bill is established a member from the Congress is needed to support the bill in front of a committee. From the committee it gets passed to the House of Representatives, then to the Senate, then finally to the President. It is now up to the President to make a decision. The President can, at any time, can create a law if he feels it would benefit for the economy. A law I would like to take affect would be that animals no longer should be exploited for amusement or experimental purposes. No animals should be subject to cruel acts. Another law I would like to see happen would be that the Health Care programs should be free. Many people are not getting the proper health treatment because they can't afford it.

  9. A law is made through Congress. The law starts as a bill which is brought up by a member of Congress to a committee. The committee would pass it to the House of Representatives where the bill would be voted on by the delegates. If passed, the bill would then be moved to the Senate, where once again, the bill would be voted upon. If passed, the bill gets moved to the president, where he can veto or approve the bill into a law. If the president veto's a bill, Congress can override the veto with a 2/3 vote.
Two laws that I would like to see in affect are free health care and people choosing where their tax money goes. I would like to see free health care go into affect because there are many Americans today who can't afford it and end up having huge medical bills if they get hurt or sick. If free health care was in affect, people would be relieved knowing that if there would be a doctor available for them if they get hurt or sick. I also agree with Vince about how people should choose where their tax money goes towards. Having this law would allow people to put their tax money towards what they think would help the economy and what they think is right.

  10. To start a laws existence the law is put on to a ballot. The people then must vote in favor for it in order for it to be passed. Another was a law can be made is if the president and the people of congress feel the law is needed for the better of the United States. One law I would like to see made is the lowering of the voting age. I think they should educate you more on presidential elections your freshmen year in high school. Laws apply to high school students as well, and should have a voice as well. I understand that people would say that's to young. The thing is if they are well educated on it they will have their opinions as well on who should be the president. Another law i would like to see made is the right to do with your property as you wish. My family owns a good amount of land behind our house, and is getting in trouble with the city for getting trees cut down. We had them checked and were legal to cut down. The city still gets mad and says we can't build on our property. It is our land and we payed for it. Why can't we do with it as we wish? I know of a lot of families around here with the same problem. I think all people would enjoy to be able to do as they wish with their land. It's not like their putting anyone in danger. Might as well use your resources when you have them.

  11. When a law is made, it's because someone is trying to fix what they dislike in the world. For example, the new law where you can no longer talk on the phone when you are driving. There were a lot of car accidents caused by talking and driving so that's why people agreed with this law and passed it. I still see people talking on their cell phones while driving, but now there is a consequence for it. Laws are made so it can keep everyone under control and have some sort of structure for people to follow. The first law that I would like to see in affect is good and proper education for the special needs. In order to get a good education you have to go to a private school, which costs a lot of money, and most of the parents can't afford it. So the children are missing out and not getting the proper education they deserve. I would also like to see our taxes going to much better causes then supplying explosives for war or keeping the men in Iraq. I would like to see our money going to providing health care for young children with diseases who's parents can't afford the hospital bills. Or going to taking homeless people off the streets.

  12. A law is passed by Congress. It starts out as a bill and brought up by a member of Congress to a committee, then the house of Representatives, then to the Senate, and finally to the president. Then the president decides if he wants to approve the bill to become a law. Also a proposed law is put on a ballot and people vote and decide if the law is right. A law that I would like to see in affect is lowering the age to vote to 16. When your 16, you have enough knowledge to understand what is going on in the world and your vote can make a difference in who will lead our country. If people start young to learn about politics, laws, and presidential elections, then society as a whole could be more united into the subject. Another law I would like to be passed is free health care. The health care in America is horrible. It costs so much money and you have to always worry about not getting hurt. If government provided free health care to their people, then people wouldn't stress out of getting hurt or being so distracted by it. Most Americans don't even have health care because it is too expensive for them. I really hope government finds a way to provide people with health care.

  13. For a law to be put into effect, it has to be voted on by voters who will be affected. After all, people have the right to be a part of what is going to happen to them. If the president and congress thinks that there is another thing that needs to be made a law, they to have the right to make and process a law. I personally would want to change the law on driver’s licenses. I would like it a lot better if it was only the 6 months it used to be. Yeah a year is not that long, but some parents are strict and won’t even let their students drive another person till they hit that year. My parents were a little easier on that and only made me wait a few months, but for my friends, some of their parents wont let them drive even siblings places. So if they changed it back to the 6 months verses the year, I think a lot more teenagers would be a lot happier. Another law I would like to see changed also has to do with driving. I would like it if teenagers, under the age of 18, were able to use blue tooth’s to make calls while driving. Maybe not right when they get their licenses but after say 6 months. I personally dislike how you have to be 18 to do that. It would not make much of a difference, but I hate having to hang up, or being hung up on, when I go driving or when a friend begins driving. I dislike it especially if we were in an important conversation because later on we usually forget to continue our conversation. It then becomes to late to talk about.

  14. Laws are mad to make our world a better and safer place. It is a bill at first and a bill is sent to senate where there has to be at least a 51/100 vote yes to pass it. It is then sent to the house of congress where it is again studied and voted. it needs a at least a 281/435 vote of yes in order for it to pass. It is then sent to the president. If the President signs the bill it becomes a law. It is also possible that it can become a law if the president does not sign it for ten days. Making a law is a long process which has to go through many people and branches of government. I would like to see our health care be one of the main focus so that everyone can have health insurance. A lot of people can not afford health insurance nowadays so it would help them greatly with expenses rising every year. It is important because many diseases are now spreading and almost everybody gets sick or injured so it would benefit everyone. I would like to see a limit on the access for people to purchase guns. Guns being bought are one of the causes of a lot of deaths in our nation. It would be a lot better if guns were limited so that it would be a lot safer around the U.S.

  15. A law comes into being in many ways. First, a bill must be introduced in either the House of Representatives or the Senate. Then it must be sent to a committee for a hearing. From there it must be passed, rejected or no action can be taken. The passed bill is then read in open session at the house of Reps, or the Senate and then sent to the Rules Committee. From there they can decide if the bill is passed on to the next level or discarded. The bill must pass through both houses in order to move on to governor/ president. The president then can decide if it should be a law or vetoed. If it becomes vetoed, it still has the possibility of being a law with some refinement, and has to go through the system all over again. Also if the governor fails to act on the bill, it could still be passed as a law without his consent. Also, the legislature can override a veto and the bill can become a law without the approval of the governor. A law I believe we should have/ edit, is that the age to which you are allowed to drive your friends should be edited, and vetoed because teens find ways around the “solo” driving. That condition doesn’t stop anyone from doing anything, so it would be best if it was nicked. Also a law I believe we should have is mandatory recycling. Well this seems impossible to be done, but it can happen. If the government made it mandatory that the public recycles, than we can recover more materials and remake them into other things. Every little bit helps.

  16. The process of making a law is a very long process that goes through many people. The law that is wished to be made is a bill at first and that bill is sent to the senate. The law is voted on and majority rules. It is then sent to the house of congress where it is again studied and voted on. It needs a at least a 281/435 vote of yes in order for it to go onto the president. If the President signs the bill it becomes a law. Another way a law can be made is if it is put on a ballot and the public votes on it. I would like to make it illegal to own more than two houses because there are a lot of homeless people out there who could live in that space if smaller, cheaper houses were built there, and the more houses there are, the less place wild anials can live. I also agree with hayley that everyone should be provided with health care. There are a lot of people who are seriously ill that can't get medical attention. That way, if people can't afford it, they can still live happy and healthy.

  17. Laws are first proposed to the Senate and they can do a number of things with the proposed law. They can say no to it immediately, alter or change it, or send it to the House of Representatives. After the House votes, if the vote shows up as 51% or higher passing the "law," it is then sent the the executive branch, or the President. He has the power to accept it and sign it, or veto it. However, if the President vetoes it, it then goes back to the Senate and the House of Representatives and if they both pass the law with 2/3rds or more, the bill will become a law. I agree with Ariel in which I think there should be a mandatory recycling law. It is so easy to just recycle and it would help the environment so much. Whether people believe in global warming or not, it is just the better thing to do. The government get on people's cases for plenty of things so why not recycling? It would be like any other law; if you don't adhere by it then you get charged. Taxes should be lowered as well, and if not lowered then put to better use. Our money the last six years or so has been invested in the war that so many Americans already protest. It should be put to help people on the street and other tragedies just like that in America.

  18. The process of how a law is passed is first, the law is put on the ballot and people vote in favor of it.Then if people vote in favor of it, it is sent to the congress and then to the president. He has makes the last decision on whether or not to approve the law. I agree with Lupita, I also want to have the rights for immagrants be viewed. If we're all considered equal then why does the government out them down? I also have many family members who are in fear of getting deported. They struggle with jobs that no onw wants to do. I see them trying to get by off of minimum wagde because they don't have the opportunity to get a better job.

  19. The law making process is a time consuming process. First, the law being created is put in the form of a bill and that bill is sent to the House of Representatives then to the Senate to be voted on. If the law is still standing, it is then sent to the president to be vetoed or passed. If the president vetoes the bill, Congress can override his decision by a 2/3 vote.
Two laws I would like to be in affect would be a united health care program that would allow people of all ages and salary level to receive appropriate health care for free. I think it is needed because our health care system right now is unfair and doesn't help all americans. Many countries around us have already created international health care programs payed for by taxes and I think this is a tax that is needed. Too many people go untreated or go bankrupt after hospital stays and as a country, we need to protect our fellow americans.
I agree with Robertino, I too would like to see a limit on guns go into affect. Too often incidents happen with armed weapons that could have been prevented if we had more strict laws on guns. I think if we raised the age of purchasing a gun and put more regulations on guns, our community will be more safe.

  20. A law starts out as a bill, which is sent to the senate. The senate can either say no to the bill all together, or change the bill as much as they please. The bill is then sent to the House of Representatives. The House votes, and if its approved 51% or higher, it is sent to the President where he can either veto the bill or sign it, making it a law. If the president vetos a bill, it is sent back to the senate. If the senate votes and wins with a 2/3 vote, it becomes a law.
One law that I believe should be made is a law that bans corporation funding for presidential candidates. This would get rid of the financial prerequisite for running for president. We might get more qualified people running for president, instead of the most wealthy.
Another law that i would like to see enacted would be to ban smoking everywhere. The only reason why it is the only "drug" thats legalized is because its the only one that the government can make money off of. I think that an anti-smoking law would be justified under protecting public health, and not to mention, the tobacco industry I one thatIi wouldn't mind seeing destroyed.

  21. Nice Post Ariel. I agree with your dad. The market must have ups and downs, and it is natural. People who were foolishing throwing money around, will be hurt the most...There's a lesson in there some where... I hope you don't have any credit card debt.

  22. A law can come into being in several ways. One major way is starting out as a bill or resolution in the United States Congress. Bills are put into categories such as private or public bills. Resolutions deal with subjects regarding one specific house and only that house reads the resolution. Bills and resolutions are introduced to the House of Representatives by a number and summary. If bills are passed by either the House or Senate, the bill is read three times in Congress to give careful thought to each of the bills. Standing committees go through all of the bills to decide which ones should be considered by Congress. Once the bill reaches the floor it is debated and voted on. The process is so complex, lengthy, and selective that only about 10% of bills are passed per year. Another way of creating laws is going through local governments regarding local issues. An example of this is the Belmont smoking ban law that started out as a citizen’s complaint.

  23. A law can come out if congress create some good idea in their bills or law and it passed by the senate and each of that need sign of president in order to pass that law. Somehow president can also encourage congress to make a law that is good for U.S.A. it is really important to make law that is approved in constitution of U.S.A. I would like to see health care reform as a new law of U.S.A. because that just help every single American in their daily life.
